The beauty salon - from care to inner harmony

Do you sometimes feel like your day starts with a nervous glance at your watch and ends with... well, with checking the time too? This is exactly how I used to function until recently. Phone in one hand, task list in the other, no time for myself.

One day I realised that I was still operating on automatic pilot. Not once did I think about how I myself was feeling - I was just realising "something out there" to get it done before the deadlines. You know the feeling? Well, it was at this point that it occurred to me that I needed a breather. A simple stop, to do something totally for myself. That's when I got the idea: "How about going to a beauty salon?" I remembered Edith, a friend of mine who has been in cosmetology for years. I thought: "Whoever, but she will definitely inspire me." And listen, I soaked it in. I realised that a good beauty salon can be a place of real transformation - not only visually, but also mentally.

How did Edith's adventure in cosmetology begin?

Let's start, perhaps, with Edith herself, because this is no typical beautician. She is a woman who draws her knowledge not only from textbooks or studies (although chemistry and microbiology gave her a solid foundation), but also from her own life experiences.

As she told me, it all started in the 1990s, when she herself was struggling with serious skin problems - mainly on her back. Back then, there wasn't access to as many dermocosmetics as there are today and the internet was just in its infancy.

"I've been dabbling with homemade concoctions out of a lack of leeway. I read somewhere that you can make a herbal macerate. And then I tried other ideas - and that's how I got hooked. It was something of a challenge to help myself, because professional care was really hard to come by at the time."

Eventually, Edyta went on to study chemistry and microbiology, but after the birth of her child, she decided it was time to pursue her true vocation and enrolled in cosmetology school. She got her first training at a French brand salon. She was fortunate enough to receive training first in Warsaw, then in Paris, and her first client turned out to be... the beautician she had gone to before! Imagine her surprise.

"I remember thinking: 'Oh no, it's her!' I was terribly stressed because it was like a student having to handle his own teacher. But it worked out great, and I reassured myself that I was in the right place."

Why is a beauty salon so important?

For many people, 'beauty salon' is mainly associated with waxing, nails and possibly some sort of facial mask. And sure, that's done there too, but - as Edyta says - that's just the tip of the iceberg. The real magic happens when someone comes in with a problem that has been bothering them for a long time (be it acne scars, blemishes, polluted skin) and comes out realised and full of fresh energy.

"I see the most spectacular changes in young girls with acne. They are usually tired of fighting this problem. They've tried everything: drugstore cosmetics, advice from the web and even all sorts of diets. And at some point they end up at the beauty salon thinking: 'This is a last resort.' And then I see how their skin improves, how their confidence returns. It's something indescribable."

I have to tell you that, listening to these stories, I myself have become convinced that well-chosen treatments can transform not only one's appearance, but also the way one looks at oneself in the mirror. And, as we know, self-esteem is invaluable.

Skincare myths worth dispelling

Since we're on values, let's move on to myths - because Edyta is a master at debunking them. The first one? The belief that the more cosmetics we use, the better.

"Washing your face twice a day with gel to make it 'super-clean' is one of the biggest mistakes I see. By doing this, we take away the skin's natural protective barrier. The skin dries out, so then we have to buy even more moisturisers to rescue the situation. A vicious circle. And yet, sometimes it's enough to take a break from all these specific products and let the skin breathe."

The second thing is collagen creams. Sounds tempting, because who doesn't want more collagen in their skin, right?

"Collagen in creams is a great marketing ploy. The problem is that this protein doesn't penetrate the skin so easily. If you want to realistically stimulate collagen production, it's better to reach for treatments like micro-needle radiofrequency or laser."

Manual cleaning - a relic of the past or something important after all?

There are quite a few people in the beauty world who say that manual cleansing is a thing of the past. After all, there are various advanced technologies, chemical peels, apparatus and a host of other wonders. Yet Edyta insists that manual skin cleansing still has its vital place.

"It's a bit like preparing a canvas. Before you apply paint, you have to have it smooth and clean, right? It's the same with the skin. If you don't remove blackheads and cleanse your pores, even the best creams or ampoules won't have the effect they could. Of course, this is done skilfully and with hygiene so that the face is not irritated afterwards."

I had mixed feelings myself, as the only thing I associated with 'manual cleansing' was a red face and two days of recovery. However, Edyta says that with the right technique and the support of soothing cosmetics after the treatment, such a problem is virtually non-existent. Often, the skin is already in a much better state the next day.

Skincare rituals that change everything

When asked what you can do at home to sustain the effects of in-office treatments, Edyta immediately points to caring for the eye area. According to her, this is where the skin is the most delicate and thinnest, yet most prone to dehydration.

"A good eye cream is a must. And it's not about it being super expensive, it's about it actually working. I always pat it in gently to improve circulation on occasion. It's a trivial trick and the difference can be really noticeable, especially with morning puffiness."

In addition, Edith recommends the so-called "golden hour" - which is the moment just after waking up.

"This is when our skin is particularly receptive. If you have time in the morning, give yourself a facial massage, apply a serum or mask. Seriously, even a few minutes of this kind of ritual can make you look and feel so much better."

Modern technology in the beauty salon

This does not mean, of course, that Edyta is opposed to novelty. On the contrary, she greatly appreciates advanced technologies and is keen to introduce them if they really have an effect. One of her 'hors d'oeuvres' is micro-needle radiofrequency, which she claims is sometimes groundbreaking in the fight against wrinkles and loss of firmness.

"It's a combination of micro-punctures and collagen heating. It sounds futuristic, but the results are unearthly: the complexion becomes tighter and wrinkles and fine lines begin to smooth out. Does it hurt? It's known, everyone feels discomfort differently, but generally it's bearable and the results can be truly spectacular."

To me, this sounds like something I'd like to try one day - preferably before I look in the mirror one day and start wondering if someone has accidentally stolen my youthful glow!

The beauty salon - a place of relaxation and transformation

Okay, but what if we don't have any serious skin problems? Does it even make sense to visit a beauty salon? According to Edyta, absolutely. She is often visited by women (but also men!) who simply want to take care of themselves, relax and feel a little luxury every day.

care

"It can be such a moment of respite. Who says we always have to come with a specific 'defect'? Sometimes it's good to take a break from the world, mute your phone and let someone else take care of us. Besides, isn't that what taking care of yourself is all about? To feel good in your body and your head?"

Martyna, who hosts the podcast and regularly visits Edith's practice, also emphasises this mental aspect:

"I feel like I'm taking time off from the whole world. I'm lying on this bed, someone is massaging my face, applying serums and creams - and suddenly I forget I had anything to do today. I come out of there reset, and in the process my skin looks like it's been turned back the clock a few years."

Why trust the professionals?

Well, you will ask: "But is it really worth investing in the services of a beauty salon when there are so many products in the drugstores? Can't we embrace it ourselves?" Well, sure, we can buy all sorts of creams, masks and toners, but... there is one thing missing: expertise and experience.

"I always say that a cosmetologist is a bit like a skin doctor. Because if we have serious problems, we don't look for solutions on the internet, we go to a specialist. It's the same with the skin. And a beauty salon is a place where someone looks at you individually, takes into account your lifestyle, your habits and even your medical history, and selects the right skin care methods."

Edyta admits that she tests new treatments on herself to see if they are safe and effective:

"It's kind of my rule: if something doesn't suit me, I won't offer it to clients. I'd rather lose one treatment on offer than risk someone getting burned and dissatisfied."

To me, this is a signal that such a specialist is approaching things with integrity and not just 'because it's the fashion'.

The beauty salon - your place for a moment of mindfulness

And with this, we have come to a key conclusion: a beauty salon is not just a place where you get your nails done or apply a facial. It's first and foremost a space where you can stop, breathe and focus on yourself. For a long time, I thought this sounded terribly cliché, but when I really tried it, I found that it could almost act as a mini-retreat.

"Ten, fifteen years ago, visits to the beauty salon were associated by many with a luxury that few people could afford. Today, thanks to greater awareness, more and more people treat it as an investment in themselves - in their well-being and skin condition," Edyta points out.

In my opinion, it's a long shot. What is the alternative? Rushing ahead all our lives without thinking about the fact that the body (including the skin) also needs support and regeneration? Sooner or later, such ignorance will backfire on us. In a beauty salon, we not only receive professional care, but also a moment's respite, which in today's world is worth its weight in gold.

To sum up...

  • Cosmetic surgery can be the place where you experience a real metamorphosis - not only in your appearance, but also in your well-being.
  • This is a space where a cosmetologist will look at you individually, help you deal with skin problems and advise you on how to maintain the results at home.
  • It is worth remembering that grooming is not just 'another chore', but an investment in health and better wellbeing.
  • Manual cleansing, well-chosen eye creams, a 'golden hour' facial massage or modern treatments such as micro-needle radiofrequency can all make you look at the mirror with more affection.
  • By the way, in such a study you can really calm down and catch a distance from the daily chaos.

So if you're still hesitant about whether this is something for you, why not break through for once and give yourself a chance for such a "cosmetic holiday"? I assure you that you will probably want to come back more often. Because who wouldn't want to feel better in their own skin - literally and figuratively?

I already know that a good beauty salon is not a fad, but a valuable support on the long (and sometimes bumpy) road to a beautiful and healthy complexion. And let's not forget - a little luxury never hurt anyone! Sometimes just allowing yourself that one visit is enough to realise that taking care of yourself is more important than you think. Go ahead, give it a try - your skin will thank you.
