Corsetry: History, Passion and Modernity

corsetry

You know what's really special these days? The fact that some old crafts that seem to have been forgotten are still doing well and even thriving. This is exactly the case with corsetry.

At first glance it sounds old-fashioned, doesn't it? But after talking to Eve i Luke, masters of the trade, one gets the impression that corsetry is not only an art, but also something much deeper - a combination of tradition, emotion and modern solutions. This is truly fascinating!

It started with... leaf corsets for Barbie?

Luke recalls how it all started when he played in kindergarten. "I used to make corsets out of leaves for my cousins' Barbie dolls. Imagine that - leaves! And now I sew real underwear. Life writes such stories that you wouldn't even think of it." - she says, laughing. Eve, on the other hand, ended up in corsetry somewhat by chance. "It was a moment in my life when I needed a change. I was looking for something different to absorb me. And you know what, I got sucked in for good. It's something I do with my heart." - he adds.

What did corsetry used to look like?

Well, just imagine the days when everything was done by hand, piece by piece. No ready-made materials, no shortcuts. "It used to be that underwire tunnels were made from cotton. Today we have ready-made synthetics. It's a completely different world." - Eve recalls.

Luke adds that access to materials used to be severely restricted: "Lace, ribbons, rubber bands in different colours? Forget it. You took what you had. Even if someone had an idea for something special, there was nothing to make it out of."

But these old materials had their quality. "I have lace that is 50 years old, from my grandmother. They still look great. Today some fabrics stretch or tear after a few washes." - Luke says. That's impressive, isn't it?

Today's corsetry: comfort and diversity

Now it's a completely different tale. Today we have so many models that it's hard to choose. "There used to be two models - the classic Viennese and something for larger busts. Now? Bralettes, balconettes, thermo-modelled bras... The choice is huge." - says Eve.

Luke also notes that women today are more demanding when it comes to comfort: 'It used to be that you wore what you had and that was it. Today, every client is looking for something that not only looks good, but is also comfortable. Comfort is the key now."

Lingerie personalisation - a hit at Bouduar

At Bouduar, we approach lingerie very differently. It's not just about selling ready-to-wear, but about making lingerie that really fits. "We've introduced alterations because every woman is different and lingerie should last as long as possible," - Luke says.

What can you do in Bouduar? List of alterations:

  • Narrowing of the bra's circumference - classic back;
  • Replacement of tunnel and underwire;
  • Converting a bra into a nursing bra;
  • Repair and replacement of hooks;
  • Replacing the fastening with a front fastening;
  • Shortening or replacing shoulder straps;
  • Sewing in pockets for breast prostheses;
  • Underarm trimming;
  • Sew-in insert pockets;
  • Replacement of shoulder straps with detachable straps.

"Each of these alterations is more than a fix. It's a way of making the lingerie live with you, change with you and respond to your needs." - Eve emphasises.

Underwear repair and ecology: small steps, big change

Instead of throwing it away, you can repair it. It sounds simple, but in the age of 'fast fashion' this is something really important. By repairing lingerie, we are taking a small step towards going green. Replacing straps or repairing underwire is a small cost, and it allows you to continue to enjoy your favourite bra." - says Luke.

There is also another dimension to the repair - an emotional one. "There are women who bring their favourite bras and say, 'Please save it, I can't part with it.' And you know what, those are the moments when you feel that what you're doing really makes sense." - he adds.

Underwear and the psyche: why is it so important?

Luke talks about his workshops for women after mastectomy: "For many women, changing their underwear to one that is functional but not necessarily pretty is a difficult moment. That's why adapting the underwear they like to their new needs is something special for them. It's not only a matter of comfort, but also of regaining their self-esteem."

Eve notes that underwear has a huge impact on our wellbeing: "A woman who is wearing nice lingerie immediately feels better. It's a small thing, but it changes the whole day."

Traditions and secrets of craftsmanship

Corsetry is also about secrets. "Everyone has their own methods, their own ways of finishing. It's a bit like putting a jigsaw puzzle together - every detail matters." - Eve says. And although much has changed, some things have remained the same. "Whalebones or tunnels are still the basis. The materials are different, but the idea is the same." - Luke adds.

Summary: Corsetry is more than sewing

A conversation with Ewa and Lukasz shows that corsetry is not just a profession. It is a passion, an art and a way of life. It is a combination of tradition and modernity and attention to detail with thinking about the needs of the clients.

In a world where everything is becoming mass, an approach like Bouduar's is a real gem. What do you think? Instead of buying a new bra, why not give a second life to the one you already have?

What underwear should you choose for summer?

Heat, despite being something we wait for all year, can be tiring. Inappropriate clothing exacerbates the discomfort associated with high temperatures. Underwear is particularly important in this regard – not all of it is suitable for summer.

Trendy lingerie colours for the wedding

We say „fashionable lingerie colours for a wedding” and you think - white and beige? That's how it works and it's the natural and instinctive direction of choosing lingerie under a wedding dress. We could end the topic there, but we don't, because after all, we live in an age where you go away from the usual patterns and step outside your own comfort zone.
